The STAR LODGE team of future drivers, between events at Marburg Easter Sunday,No wonder Australia's leading driver is a woman.Look at the weight of numbers here.Four girls, one lonely boy.Hang in there son!
INFORMATION FOR THE BROWSERS.
The size is a little smaller and the pace a lot slower, but these young drivers aged 6 to 16 years are just as competitive as their older and larger counterparts.Their ponies are SHETLANDS which measure up to 10.2 hands .(a hand is 4 inches or approximately 100mm).They compete in organised races at registered harness tracks and at local Shows.
The drivers register a racing name for their ponies and also racing colours with the Association.
Safety of all drivers and their ponies whilst on the track is very important,so drivers and ponies must attend training sessions and trial to the stewards satisfaction, before being allowed to compete in a race.
Ponies must trot.If they break gait and are not sufficiently restrained, the pony can be relegated in finishing order and the driver reprimanded or suspended.
Drivers race for trophies, prizes or vouchers, but horsemanship and sportsmanship are expected from the drivers at all times. It's great to see a young driver comming down the straight with a big smile,no matter where they finish,
The Association is like a big family with all members getting on well together.
Easter Sunday at Marburg was a good example, with 26 ponies competing in 4 races.
Run of the day was INATIK driven by Karina Vievers, scoring from the backmark of 210 metres in easy fashion.Pony mare and Driver are both 11 years old.
