W'ere back.Racing commenced Saturday night at Albion Park with a mammoth 13 race program. The equine influenza is still with us to some degree, but with stringent controls policed by both the Harness Racing Board and Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries, horse movements for racing are possible.Cindy appeared with camera at ready, and we shall have action shots galore in the weeks to come. A shot of the field in full flight at Goulburn NSW last Sunday,November 17 2007.Just like the enthusiasts at Victor Harbour SA,the local participants at Goulburn,in conjunction with the City Council, constructed their own 1000 metre track on the racecourse.Once the home of the incredibly prestigious "GOULBURN SAPLING STAKES" and a hub of the pastoral "sqattocracy",Goulburn had been neglected by successive harness racing administrations. The Goulburnites have bit back with a vengeance and are now sitting pretty with a great feeder track for the Menangle 1400 metre project which is currently under construction. The short trip on a super highway and land a bit cheaper than the Menangle area, will see the re-birth of Goulburn trots.
Thirty eight year old Belgian reinsman ,Christophe Martens, hit a career high spot in taking out the 2007 World Professional Driver's Championship, conducted in Victoria, and North and South Islands of New Zealand.second was Kiwi star,Colin de Filippi, with Sweden's Bjorn Goop in third place.Kerryn Manning took fourth for Australia.Say what you like about the pitfalls of this type of international competition, the fact is that Martens adapted best of the ten competing drivers, and was able to get a spark from every horse that he drove. His handling of the slushy conditions at Moonee Valley was proof positive of this. One hopes that our band of administrators took close note of this event and learnt from it.It does put a dent in the armour of complacency when you cop a flogging.Denis.
