"THE WEEK THAT WAS.."..30/07/2011..

Just as December 25 is Christmas Day,so should July 23/2011 be now known as "Bill Crosby night".With the 2yo Triad divisions up as the support races for the Winter Cup,Haigslea (Ipswich) based owner/trainer,Bill Crosby and his stable driver,Gary Whitaker, snatched not one but both Finals.First on was the Fillies event where Shez No Fake led throughout to win clearly from Cha Ching Chaching in a sizzling 1-56.4 mile rate.A daughter of Art Major from the very well performed Sheza Fake (Fake Left x Vanston Hanover mare,whose lifetime performance reads out at 50 starts for 13-12-10 and $136,869),Shez No Fake was bred by Tony Burgoyne at Rockhampton and leased with an option by Crosby,who exercised his right of purchase in the weeks coming to the race.The filly's form line now reads 2 from 2 and a bank balance of $56,000.This writer's curiosity was satisfied by the win.Having seen a plain but powerful filly demolish a good trial field at Albion Park about a month back,I reported at home that "Crosby's got another one that can go,I don't know what it is but it had a set of red hopples."When Shez No Fake bolted away in the Triad Final,there were the red hopples..No wonder I don't bet.This result appears to add weight to Graeme Bowyers opinion that of all Fake Left's classic and feature winners,those from Vanston Hanover mares were the best.It seems that this opinion may hold up in the broodmare department as well.

One hour passes and the firm of Crosby and Whitaker are back in Victory Lane again,with the Colts and Geldings trophy firmly in hand thanks to Western Mail who provided a spectacular exhibition of power,carving out the mile in a rate of 1-55.9.Taken away from the field by Whitaker at the 300m,the gelding was feeling the pinch at the post but the opposition were in worse shape with no hope of running him down.This a homebred triumph,with Crosby sending the un-raced Mystery Waters (yet another Fake Left mare) to Western Edition,who just happens to be a half brother to Art Major.( are there similarities here).Western Edition was the result and the form line now reads 10-8-2 and $100,549.

Bill Crosby,who,quite seriously,breeds and races for the fun of it if you like,was over the moon with the result,describing it as greatly satisfying from a personal viewpoint.The above pair are not the only stars in 'team Crosby'.Currently spelling is Final Champion..1-57.0,(Town Champion from Timid Lady by Fake Left)a 3yo responsible for figures of 28 starts for 12-8-3 and $69,514.This horse has caused a change of policy in the Bill Crosby stable as they have lashed out and purchased Town Champion to stand in the Ipswich area at Fernvale.Worse decisions have been made in this world and Bill Crosby has a track record for making things work out well..

It was an "Ipswich night" at Albion Park last week with the first five winners going to Haigslea-Fernvale based stables of Darrel Graham (Franco Emerger and Caesar Supreme),Bill Crosby,and the big debut of Roman Ruler for Al Barnes.It should make us all feel good.

IT'S OVER!!.The career of the worlds richest pacer has come to and end.Blacks A Fake was retired by his connections after running second to Georgetown(Michael Langdon) in last Saturday night's Winter Cup.....An incredible performance to take four Inter-dominion Grand Finals and bow out with a form line that reads 105 starts for 72 wins,18 seconds and 6 thirds and total prizemoney of $4.535,438.His best mile rate was 1-53.7,quick enough indeed,but it is not for his great speed that the "Black Superman" will be remembered,but for his enormous staying power,and ability to pull out a bit more when it was wanted.Attitude and determination took him a long way,and,for all but a handful of starts,always against the best of opposition.A truly remarkable horse and a truly remarkable career.He deserves a statue.The big roundabout coming into Boonah would be an excellent site..

"THE WEEK THAT WAS..THE IPSWICH QUEENSLAND PERSPECTIVE...24/07/2011..

The richest pacer in the world,and certainly Queenslands best known harness horse,Blacks A Fake seems set to have his final race start in the Sunshine State in tonight's Group One feature,the SEW Eurodrive Winter Cup.Blessed with the number three alley from the mobile it seems that a repeat performance of the Sunshine Sprint will be the the result.If it all pans out,the "Black Superman" will have earned $4,575,438,from 105 starts..A staggering $43,575 per outing.I think he is like the "one in 50 years" flood.It will be a while before we see another horse like him."Blackie"will be there on Sky Racing of course when his trainer,Natalie Rasmussen, produces him at Menangle or Melton in pursuit of the big bucks.For Brisbane,it's "thanks for the memories"..

Blacks A Fake is part of a small high quality team of pacers which Natalie Rasmussen will train from Brian Hancock's "Teeny Lodge" at yet another Albion Park,this time on the south coast of New South Wales.Leading New Zealand trainer,Mark Purdon,will also base his elite team at Hancock's property to mount a serious assault on Menangle.Purdon will also send 25 horses to Victoria under the care of Scott Phelan,due to a decision to cut drastically his NZ numbers.Purdon cited a lack of prizemoney in the shaky isles for the move.There will be a second sign on the gate at "Teeny Lodge"..Trainers in residence,,"Mr Inter-Dominion...Ms Inter-Dominion..and Mr New Zealand..Somehow,the concept makes me slightly uneasy..

Crunch time has come.Broodmare owners must decide whether the future of Queensland harness racing is bright enough to breed another crop of foals in the hope of producing another champion,or at least a horse that breaks even and provides a few thrills along the way.In the next six weeks we will discuss the pros and cons of what has become a high cost and high risk venture..

Resultsville.Gold Coast 15/07..Montana Flyer (Chantal for Tony Turpin)..Le Brique (Gary Whitaker for Bill Crosby)..Supper Waltz Wilson (Steven Doherty for Francis Weston)..Albion Park 16/07..Melton Sotera (Pete for John McMullen)...Albion Park 19/07..Gallymont Cruz (Kelli for Geoff Dawson)..Goddaz Promised (Pete for John McMullen)..I Am Terror (Lola Weidemann for Ricky Gordon)...Redcliffe 20/07..Maximus Extremis (Trevor Lambourn)..Gold Coast 21/07..Crackerofaparty (Ann Manwaring)..Deadly Smile (Pete McMullen for Shane Sanderson)..Yul Brynner (Brad Cowen for Shane Sanderson)...

Racing Minister backs harness plan
17 July 2011

Victorian Minister for Racing Dr Denis Napthine outlines HRV's strategic plan at Maryborough
The trotting component of Harness Racing Victoria’s strategic plan was today launched by Minister for Racing Denis Napthine on the final day of the Redwood Classic in Maryborough.

A week after announcing the return of harness racing to six regional clubs, Dr Napthine said the plan contained more good news for Victorian harness racing.

“One of the key focus areas of this plan will be initiatives emphasising the trotting gait; developing new racing products, including more trotters in Victorian harness racing, increasing prize money and supporting the breeding and yearling sales industry,” Dr Napthine said.

“The Victorian Coalition Government this year announced a $79.5 million Victorian Racing Industry Fund (VRIF) which includes $10 million to boost the local breeding industry. I look forward to working in partnership with HRV to create more local jobs by developing a world class breeding industry here in Victoria.

“I am also particularly excited by HRV’s goal of creating a new $500,000 Group 1 event and internationalising the local industry by attracting some of the big harness racing names from overseas. This race will replace the Inter Dominion Trotting Series which will run in Victoria for the last time in 2012.

“The Coalition Government supports HRV in their vision for the future of the harness racing and the $79.5 million VRIF will be an invaluable asset in achieving these goals” Dr Napthine said.

HRV Chairman Ken Latta said the HRV Board was pleased to present the Strategic Plan to the industry.

“The Board has worked hard to put an achievable plan together to set the direction of the industry for the next few years. We believe the plan sets a good framework for management to implement.”

“HRV must take the opportunity to move with the times to increase the reach and popularity of our sport for future generations. Many initiatives are designed to achieve that aim.”

These key initiatives will demonstrate that HRV sees the growth in the sport coming from the continued rise in the trotting ranks in Victoria. Some of the key components of the plan are:

•Runing the Inter Dominion Trotting Final for the last time in 2012 for $250,000 in stakes;
•Developing a new Group 1 feature race for open class trotters which will encourage Northern Hemisphere participation to replace the Inter Dominion Trot;
•Running this new race by 2013 and offering prize money of $500,000 by 2013. This will become HRV’s richest race;
•Introducing a new Group 1 futurity race for trotters open to internationally-bred trotters as well as local trotters;
•Introducing a stand alone premium yearling sale for trotters from 2013 with the purpose of attracting international buyers from New Zealand and the Northern Hemisphere;
•Encouraging breeding and ownership of trotters by increasing the proportion of stake money available for trotters from the current 17% of total stakes to 25% by 2015.
•Continuing to develop dedicated trotting events such as the fantastic Redwood Carnival and the Breed for Speed Series to further expand opportunities for the trotter; and
•Separating the fillies from the colts for the 2YO trotters classics such as Vicbred and Breeders Crown finals.
The Plan will be released in full by the HRV Chairman in the coming weeks.

COMING OF PURDON CREATES TRIUMVIRATE AT TEENY LODGE"..

The harness racing website carried an interesting bit of news this week with the announcement the NZ's leading trainer,Mark Purdon,was in the process of shifting his operation to Australia.More precisely,"team Purdon" will set up a 25 horse team in Victoria,under the daily supervision of Scott Phelan and a smaller,but elite group,to pursue the the bigger bucks at Menangle.A "dissillusioned Purdon cited the almost impossible task of making horses pay for themselves in NZ coupled with the likelyhood of prizemoney reductions in the near future.Considering that $11 million has flowed into the Purdon barn in the last four years from the domestic racing alone,one wonders what MP would consider a reasonable sum.Whatever,the high profile trainer driver will be fully operational in Australia at the start of the new season.The elite Menangle aimed horses will be trained from Brian Hancock's Teeny Lodge along with Natalie Rasmussens's similarly described team.The mind boggles at what might result from a think tank comprised of the above trio.Perhaps a training partnership,but,who would get top billing on the letterheads?Certainly,a meeting of minds,hopefully,not leading to a clash of egos.The possibilities are endless.

"THE WEEK THAT WAS"..17/07/2011..

The Winter Carnival of Harness racing goes to its third feature meeting tonight at Albion Park with the $60,000 Garrards Sunshine Sprint as the main event.The 1660 metre charge has drawn a top field,but the random barrier draw has seen the worlds wealthiest pacer,Blacks A Fake,come up with barrier 2.."Blackie",who showed brilliant gate speed to lead from the outside of the gate last Saturday night was a narrow but convincing winner in a rate of 1-55.4 for the same journey.Good as the opposition is,they seem to be up against it this time.In the words of a noted American thoroughbred breeder of the 80's,"that ole dog can still hunt"..

You can warm up for the superstars at Albion Park with a trip to Marburg's non-Tab meeting today.Anthony Perkins' Trump Park Stud and Tony Nutley of Horsepower Feeds and Supplements are sponsoring a strong five event card.Six trials kick the proceedings off with the first at 11.10am.Get out there,it's a great day's racing..

You know the story of the family invovement in harness racing.Yet another Glamorganvale McMullen has begun to make her mark in the sulky sitting department.Narissa,eldest of the three daughters of John McMullen at the ripe old age of 16 has already chalked up 12 winners.Interestingly,that dozen contains three doubles,the latest of these being at Redcliffe last Saturday where she scored on Princess Meg for Wanora based Ron Sallis,and Melton Striker for the home stable.Narissa is not looking at following elder brother Pete into the whirlwind lifestyle of a professional driver,but hits the books hard in year 12,firmly headed for a career in the Bio-molecular siences.She can only drive at weekends and holidays but is committed to the owner/trainer/driver concept with Miniature Classic and Melton Teddy Bear currently making up the N.J.McMullen team..

Shades of Bob Gibbs!It seems that they not only share the same name but the same aspirations.Bob Bentley has announced that the new NRL bid team,Brisbane Bombers,have made a conditional application to be based at Albion Park,pending the outcome of the current court case which will decide just who has the say over the future of the site.The Brisbane Bombers believe that their activities satisfy the Brisbane Council plan for the area..sport and recreation.Where there is smoke there is fire.Bob Bentley would put the bulldozer into the track at Albion Park with more gusto than Gibbs ripping up The Willows in Townsville for the North Queensland Cowboys..Sports Bet wasn't quite so big back then.

Today..REDWOOD..Victorian trotting's greatest day..grab the remote and get into it!!

Next week we look at the future of breeders big and small in Queensland..To breed or not to breed..that is the question!..

THIS IS A STORY SENT TO ME BY A DUTCH LADY I MET IN AUSTRIA AT THE WORLD AMATEUR DRIVER'S CHAMPIONSHIP IN 2005..IT SHOWS HOW MUCH CLAUDIA VAN DER LANS LOVED HER HORSE..THERE IS A LESSON FOR US ALL...12/07/2011..

hey my australiën friend , whats up ??

I have a little story to tell :
you never can guess , my horse , the one I raced with 5 years ago , is back .

I sold him 5 years ago , when we had to leave the stable , we then rented , to a girl , 15 years old , unter the condition , that if it did not workout , she should call me first , so I can take it back.
In the beginning i visited the horse a few times at his new stable , the girl however had an attitude , and she didnt like me to come and visit,
after a few times , I tried to get olympic (that,s the horse ) out off my mind .
after some time , maybe 2.5 years later , I found him on google , at a stable for old horses , in the middle of holland , and they could walk all day outside , but he was still owned by the girl .
that stable hade a website , so that I coulf follow him , without anybody nowing .
again 1.5 years later , he suddenly left that stable , and it didn,t say where he went .
so again I searches on the Internet , and found him in Belgium .
at a horse school for kids ...
I contacted that school , and i got a mail from a girl , she wanted to let children get into contact with horses , etc
and again , she was very contain with the horse , although the 1 e girl had not contact me , I fought well , its ok , he is ok.

after 1 year , i didnot hear anything anymore , I sent that 2e girl a mail , last december, to ask here how olympic was doing .
she told me , she had a sick child , and she hadn,t had much time , to see the horse .
and she wanted to get writ of it .
I amidiatly took aktion , en one week later , I had my horse back , without the first girl knowing it .

also , everything took 5 years , and he had a very hard time .
he was mentaly totaly dead , was very skinny , in know condition at all.
but know he looks so wonderfull , very joyfull , fresh from mind , and he has a round tumy again .

so the lesson i learned , is never give a horse to someone , you dont know , because often you can better let them shoot down . thats better for the horse .
But in this case I was there to save his as again!!

"TROT TACTICS.09/07/2011...

A leading Redland Bay veterinary surgeon,Dr David Lovell has issued a news letter emphasising the dangers of the current Hendra Virus outbreak and a list of twelve steps which should "hendra proof" your horse and yourself.The newsletter can be read by googling .Do it,this virus is deadly to horses and people,but twelve simple steps can make all the difference..

Just when things are looking a bit grim in the trotting game,someone bites the bullet and has a serious go.What can only be described as a big family operation is set to kick off at Lower Mt Walker,with Rachel and Trevor Lambourn training for Rachel's parents Margaret and Clive Scott.Accomodation for 24 horses,an 880metre track,15m wide with a top crusher dust surface,a 50m swim and a walker to come,gives Rachel and Trevor the plant to produce bulk winners.In the fairly short time that team Lambourn and Scott have been in the light harness game,they have established a very impressive strike rate in the win department.Given that the new facility presents a much more people and horse friendly atmosphere,this rate should improve.Lambourn runners have been thin on the ground while the setting up took place,but R and T are ready to roll..Watch this space..

Who said they wouldn't travel.There are 50 runners scheduled to go round at the Redcliffe Non-Tab meeting this afternoon.No less than 24 of these come from the Ipswich-Marburg area.The locals are in pursuit of a buck,lets hope they get plenty,they spend it in Ipswich and it all counts..

Cassie Saunders had a place in the spotlight on the opening night of the Winter Carnival.CS partnered Ark Monroe from the powerful Bill Dixon stable to take the honours in the Team Pink Female Drivers Invitation,a race for mares which was a promotion and fund raiser for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.Outside the leader for most of the trip,Ark Monroe ran the mile out in an impressive 1-56.4.That was win number 70 for Cassie,who was a long time out of the sulky while doing the long distance horse thing on the world scene for Toft Endurance.Cassie and her partner,Al Barnes,are working an expanding team at Fernvale with the speedy Roman Ruler about to claim the role as flagship..

HENDRA VIRUS FACT SHEET FROM LEADING VETERINARY SURGEON..DR. DAVID LOVELL.SCROLL ON DOWN F0R STEPS TO "HENDRA PROOF" YOUR HORSE AND YOURSELF..07/07/2011..

HENDRA VIRUS – THE FACTS

Hendra is back with a vengeance. The fact of the matter is that it has never gone away. The disease is here, is a fact of life, and the reality is that we all have to learn to live with it. Commonsense, understanding the disease, and some basic management steps will ensure that we can all still enjoy our equestrian activities with a minimum of risk. Even better news is the remarkable progress scientists are making with the development of a vaccine which will, if universally taken up, be the answer to the problem. It looks like there is a very reasonable chance that we will have vaccine available next year. The current situation is calamitous with 4 separate outbreaks to date and the possibility of more to happen. The period May through September is regarded as the “peak period” for Hendra although it has happened throughout the year, but it appears that June, July and August have been predominant. Of some real concern is the statement by the chief veterinary officer that sampling this year has reported a 30% incidence of virus in bat samples as compared to some 10% in other years.

Basically the disease is present in fruit bats without having any apparent clinical effect on them. It is known that the virus can be shed at particular times in the fluid secretions of the bat, with saliva and urine being potent sources. A relevant fact about fruit bats is that they ingest fruit and nectar, process it in their fore stomach, and then regurgitate it or “spit” it out in what are known as spats. This material has a high concentration of saliva and potentially, could be palatable to horses as in reality it is simply processed fruit material. One of the very pertinent findings reported by Dr Hume Fields, Our own leading Queensland world authority on fruit bats, is that they have been able to find very high concentrations of virus material directly under trees in what they call the “drip zone” and almost no virus once they leave the perimeter of the trees. This area is where the spats and urine of feeding bats will be dropped and potentially an extremely high risk area for horses. These findings are not yet published but I believe that they are critical information that horse owners need to understand as it provides solid proof that there is a very real “hot zone” of opportunity for horses to become infected. The obvious outcome is that management of horses must absolutely prevent horses from access to these areas.

For a horse to contract Hendra virus, they must have direct access to a source of the virus. They will not catch Hendra virus from “the wind”. Direct access to a source of the virus means either fruit bat fluids or another infected horse that is actually excreting virus. Humans then need to be exposed to fluids from a horse excreting the virus. (Nothing has ever been proven that a human could not contract the disease directly from exposure to bat fluids so always keep that in mind). A disturbing fact is that it is now known that a horse can actually secrete the virus for a short period of time before actually displaying any clinical abnormalities. (It is critical to remember that there is an incubation period of 5 – 16 days from when the horse is exposed to the virus and when it will develop signs of disease). An understanding of these simple facts regarding Hendra virus provide us with the keys to management that will allow us to eliminate, or certainly dramatically reduce, the risks from this disease.

HENDRA.... PROCEDURES TO ASSIST YOU AND YOUR HORSE TO STAY SAFE..

THERE ARE 3 ELEMENTS TO THE CONTROL OF HENDRA

(1) Prevent contact between fruit bats and horses

(2) Monitor your horse carefully

(3) Maintain rigorous personal hygiene

12 STEPS TO “HENDRA PROOF” YOURSELF AND YOUR HORSE

(1) RISK ANALYSIS Always assess the situation and circumstances surrounding yourself and your horse and make a judgement as to the possible risk of a problem

(2) MAINTAIN A “PERIMETER” AROUND YOUR PROPERTY You go to all the trouble to protect yourself and your horse. Do not rely on your neighbour to do the same. Maintain a perimeter so that horses across the fence cannot contact each other

(3) “QUARANTINE” ANY NEW HORSES A critical issue. Remember the incubation period where an infected horse can appear normal. Isolate any new horses that arrive at your property. Most important for spelling breeding and training farms

(4) IDENTIFY ALL PLANTS AND TREES Know the identity of all plants and trees on your property and whether they are likely to be potential food sources for bats

(5) ELIMINATE FRUIT BAT FOOD SOURCES If you cannot remove dangerous plants or trees, at least fence them off or prevent your horse having any access

(6) FEED & WATER HORSES IN OPEN SPACES or INDOORS Do not feed or water horses near any possible site where bats may feed, roost, or perch

(7) STABLE HORSES or HOLD in “SAFE” YARDS at NIGHT Bats are most active at night. Ideally do not allow horses outside where bats may be traversing or feeding

(8) TPR YOUR HORSE DAILY So easy and such a basic monitor of your horses health. Any deviation in the horse’s temperature, heart rate, or respiration is something all owner’s should know and is a primary indicator of the horse’s health

(9) CLINICALLY ASSESS YOUR HORSE Owners know their horse and intuitively will pick when the horse is not themself. Investigate thoroughly any changes in signs, symptoms or behaviour (10) WASH YOUR HANDS The most important factor of all. Strict personal hygiene is the key component in avoiding infection

(11) WEAR DISPOSABLE GLOVES Always have a box of disposable gloves on hand. Wear them if doing anything with a horse that involves contact with body fluids

(12) WEAR PPE IF IN ANY DOUBT Do not, in any circumstances, approach or attempt to do anything potentially invasive with any suspect horse without adequate personal protection equipment. Leave it to the experts

A DIFFERENT SLANT..

"BITS AND BITES OF HISTORY"..EVOLUTION OF THE SULKY (4)..THE MAKERS...

Just before we consider the men who developed and built our race carts up to the current time,we should divert a trifle and consider one facet of trotting/harness racing which exists in every country in the world bar Australia.This is of course "amateur driving".Since "amateur driving" is part and parcel of everyday tote racing in Europe,Scandanavia,Russia and the USA,the section of relevance here is the early days in the USA.Here,"the blokes with the money" make yet another appearance as the owners of private stables,often exercising their proprietorial rights by taking the reins in time trials which were a significant part of American race meetings into the 60's and still take place today.From the 1890's until about 1915,the wealthy amateurs would drive their charges against the clock in a light weight four wheeler known as a speed buggy,a coffin wagon,(it was a plain box,long and narrow with pneumatic bike wheels,the front pair mounted on a turn table,and the driver seated with his feet,legs and rear end flat on the floor about mid length) or a spider wagon.They were certainly fast as the champion mare,Lou Dillon,went 2.00 minutes neat in a wagon with her owner C.K.G.Billings at the reins and 1-58.7 pulling her race sulky when driven by her trainer,Sanders Millard.Mr Billings became the first man to drive two 2.00 minute miles when another of his stable,Uhlan,went two minutes to wagon in 1911,and 1-58.0 to sulky the following year with Charles Tanner in the bike.The performances to wagon are even more remarkable when it is realised that only 20 horses of either gait had equalled or broken 2.00 minutes up till 1922.
